Peoria, IL – The Chinese community in Peoria County wants to send a message to all residents that they are here to help. Members of the Peoria Chinese Association (PCA) have raised over $11,600 and collected thousands of masks and gloves through donations from local families.

According to Xiucheng Zhu, PCA chair, the raised fund has been used to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) from overseas. So far, the organization has brought over 10,000 masks, including some KN95 masks. These medical supplies will be donated to local hospitals including the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, OSF, and Methodist.

In addition to supplying medical safety equipment to healthcare workers, the group also donates PPE and cleaning supplies to the Peoria Police Department and local home care services.

We are organized to make home-made masks for healthcare workers and others at risk. The local Chinese Community will keep mobilizing its efforts to fight COVID-19 and together we will overcome this crisis.

2020 Peoria Chinese New Year Celebration Cancellation

Dear Friends,

The 2020 Peoria Chinese New Year Celebration Show, scheduled on Feb. 16, was canceled by the event planning committee, due to the concerns over Coronavirus outbreak in China.

The decision was made carefully based on the increasing risk of Coronavirus infection in the US recently. This has been a difficult decision as more than a hundred of performers and volunteers have been working diligently in the past few months for this event. But the health and safety of our audiences, performers, and crew has the highest priority to us.

Thank you for your understanding and the continued support! If you already purchased the tickets, our ticket team will refund you in next few days.

If you have any questions/concerns, please contact Xiucheng Zhu (Zhu_xiucheng@cat.com) or Yingying Kuai (Kuai_yingying@cat.com).

2018 Peoria Chinese New Year Appreciation Letter and Volunteer List

Our Friends at Peoria Chinese Community:

On February 18, 2018 we celebrated Chinese New Year (Year of the Dog) with a successful performance gala at the Dunlap High School Auditorium. We had more than 500 audience watching the show, including Peoria Mayor Jim Adris, and Caterpillar Vice President Karl Weiss. All of us enjoyed the wonderful performance of 18 talented teams, including Chinese folk songs, dances, Tai Chi, fashion show, and instruments. We even had a talented team from Springfield, IL. The Chinese New Year celebration has become the biggest annual event that connects our community together and introduces Chinese culture to community friends. We would like to thank all the 200 performers who have brought so many joyful moments to us. We know the performers had spent countless hours practicing, often on weekends and evenings, and many teams started last August!

As we all know volunteers are the backbone behind all of our events, and this year is no exception. This celebration is only successful because of the great help from our volunteers. Volunteers helped planning the event, reserving the place, contacting local media, making stage props, decorating the stages, designing the photo booth, selling the tickets, organizing the shows, and hosting the VIPs. While it is not possible to have a completed list, we do want to thank the following volunteers for their great help this year. We also apologize as we may have missed some names as so many people have helped this event in so many ways.

A bit history of Duan Wu Jie

Duan Wu Festival is originated in ancient China more than 2000 years ago. The festival commemorates the poet Qu Yuan (c. 340 - 278 BC) for his patriotism. The tradition of Duan Wuincludes eating Zongzi and participating in boat races. As a matter of fact, CCRG Solar Chapter at San Diego do compete in local dragon boat races.

The countries around China, such as Vietnam and Korea, also celebrate variations of this Dragon Boat Festival as part of their shared cultural heritage.
